What are they?
This is the sixth edition of the CHKS Accreditation Programme Standards for Care Homes. It builds on the previous CHKS standards for Care Homes (5th edition, 2011) and incorporates current national and professional guidance, bringing together standards of best practice and providing a framework for organisations to work towards and to subsequently gain external recognition for this achievement.
Significantly these standards are mapped to the CQC Key Lines of Enquiry by domain and to HIQA’s standards for residential care.
What's new?
Following client feedback we have incorporated a number of new standards in our latest programme: independence and choice, Care Certificate, residents involvement in matters affecting the home, involvement of GPs and escalation procedures for residents that deteriorate, accessing healthcare services e.g. dentists, opticians, hearing specialists, pharmacists, the principles of the NHS Information governance toolkit, research and development – links with universities, protection and safeguarding of vulnerable adults, community engagement and volunteers, rehabilitation and social support and rrangements for leaving the home.
We also added: enhanced preparation for home life and enhanced retail/marketing and fundraising sections. Some indicators have been included in Human Resources and Service Management i.e. staff turnover/sickness/staff training, % residents receiving the flu vaccination, % residents who have been physically restrained, unexplained absences by residents.
There are new standards on training and staff development, retailing, dementia care, rehabilitation and social support, portering, management of the deceased and bereavement support.
