This seventh edition of the CHKS accreditation standards for Primary Health Care has been extensively revised and updated to reflect current government health policy, professional guidance and international best practice, and draws on the considerable work undertaken on revisions to existing CHKS Accreditation standards for health and social care.
Primary care is provided by a range of types of organisations, nationally and internationally. These standards are intended to apply to any provider of primary care services, however the organisation is structured.
What's new?
This programme has built on the 6th edition of the accreditation programme standards for Primary Health Care Teams which was shaped by the statutory requirements embodied in the new UK General Medical Services contracting arrangements for primary care and the introduction of the Quality and Outcomes Framework (QOF) for primary care services. Changes and developments in primary care structures, quality assurance and improvement programmes nationally and internationally have also influenced changes to the standards.
During development the UK experienced another turning point in the way healthcare is managed with the advent of clinical commissioning groups (CCGs) and the increased role of NHS general practitioners in commissioning. Reference is made to these new arrangements and for organisations outside the UK, some adaption and interpretation may be required and organisations are encouraged to draw on and reflect on equivalent national legislation and guidance in place.
These standards address our main development concerns around patient safety, the patient’s experience of care, the experience of staff working within primary care, clinical governance and teamwork. The standards also continue to include those essential elements concerning systems, processes and environment.
